My Review and Thoughts:
A nice crime driven plot. A gritty drama directed by Michaël R. Roskam. This is his second feature film and I think he created something thought provoking or at least I thought so. I felt the story. I felt the gritty nature and the darkened underbelly of crime.
Written by a master storyteller Dennis Lehane. A true imaginative writer that explores the recesses of the mind through psychological human means. The hidden emotional side of life always, comes through very thick in his stories. There is a tight tension through his writing and the director of the films based on his stories, transcends that tight tension to film. The Drop is no different. This is based on the 2009 short story by Lehane, called "Animal Rescue". The Drop adds a dramatically thought out story. Amazingly comes to life through all the performances on screen. Directed in a flawless way.
Starring a wonderful cast. Tom Hardy is possibly one of the most dynamic actors acting today. He is stunning at owning his character and giving them an ultimate life and an emotional personal persona. He creates the character of Bob in that emotional personal persona. Truly shines in the part. I loved his performance.
Also seeing the late great James Gandolfini in his final role creates a somewhat perfection, yet also is tragically sad, seeing him and knowing that he is no longer with us. He no longer can give us movie lover's his ultimate wonderful style of acting. I miss his style and ruthless clarity of acting. He was always a brilliant performer. This last role was a true fitting end to his acting brilliance.
Tom Hardy's character reminds me of the persona of Rocky Balboa with secrets. A simple mind yet with a heart of passion. You can't help but fall in love with the character of Bob. Hardy creates the part in a flawless way.
Also starring the amazing Noomi Rapace. Rapace is stunning and truly a one of a kind actress. She stars as one of my favorite characters Lisbeth Salander in one of my favorite film series of all time, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl who played with Fire, and The Girl who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest. She plays Nadia in The Drop and aces it. Hardy and Rapace have great chemistry together. Both create there parts in perfect acting.
The whole movie plays out as a wonderful slow burn crime thriller with a heart and soul of a story. I felt the reality based feel of the picture. It came together in a rough everyday life setting that truly stands out as being a well-crafted crime drama with substance.
I loved it and I highly recommend it.
